The IEEE has announced yet another wireless transmission standard.
Its value proposition - WPAN enables connectivity between multimedia devices within a personal operating space.
It is supposed to bring home networks an universal service from video broadcasting (up to 55 Mbit/s in the first stage; 100-800Mbit/s later) to cable free mini Appliances. In a maximum distance of 100m 22 Mbit/s should still be achievable. Very helpful could be the intended connecting time of less then 1s. More inside offers this presentation.
However WPAN is not compatible with Bluetooth or WLAN, which already do some of the intended usage of WPAN. But, at least WPAN is not interfering with these technologies although it also uses the 2.4 GHz band.
I couldn't find many hardware or software solutions on the basis of WPAN. This might be still a thing of the future.
