WeblogsInc plays dirty

Filed in archive Entrepreneurship by tj on November 4, 2005

Over at Calacanis blog Mr. Calacanis looses his head about our new design.

No doubt there are some similarities on the two web sites. Three boxes incorporate nicely the groups of people WeblogsInc and Creative Weblogging are both are serving to. But that's where it ends.

As Jason does know most of the 'inspiration' he takes comes from blogs out there and he uses these ideas into a common style sheet. That's how web design works all over the world - no surprise here.

However he is going well over the edge here. His language is not only vulgar and defamatory but also disqualifying for someone in his position.

Is that the changed mindset of not being a startup anymore but feeling AOLish? Or is he just not clever enough to understand the implications?

First - it would have helped to tell us what problems you see there and we could worked it out. You deliberately chose not to.

Second - Jason take a look at the code or ask someone who understands it and discover on your own - no single line comes from WeblogsInc CSS or HTML code let alone any pictures.

Third - WeblogsInc is in no position to criticize others for alleged copying, given its own past behavior:

Guess who started an Outsourcing Weblog on March 2004?

Creative Weblogging on March 18th

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.outsourcing-weblog.comAnd guess who used the same name in their sidebar in April 2004?

WeblogsInc. From on April 13th
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://outsourcing.weblogsinc.comCoincidence?

Check out who started an RFID Weblog on February 8th 2004?

February 8th

http://web.archive.org/web/20040216131331/http://www.rfid-weblog.com/And on February 19th 2004 someone comes up with an RFID Weblog just out of the blue.

WeblogsInc.

Besides that there are only that many ways to assemble a blog nowadays and most template designers are using similar techniques - no news for you.

So what's next? You'll sue weblogs out there that have a graphical header or have three columns? Or you'll file a trademark on 'blog network'? Or let AOL register blogosphere and license out the right to use this name? Or rename it to AOLsphere?

Creative Weblogging sites are made by dozens of professional bloggers and hundreds of Creative Reporters. We have no reason to copy in order to succeed.

Forget this PR stunt - do what you have done before - make your sites the coolest destination on the internet and stop stone throwing. Take down these accusations!
