Wal-Mart and RFID
Filed in archive Technology on November 9, 2003
Wal-Mart has cleverly used the reluctance of other major other major chains to invest into RFID technology and regularly makes news how to use the technology. The latest bold news:
"Wal-Mart plans to spend $3 billion over the next several years on a new inventory tracking technology that uses radio frequency signals to keep tabs on merchandise, sources familiar with the project said."
"... Wal-Mart will spend about two-thirds of its RFID budget on readers and the installation of them in more than 100 distribution centers and thousands of stores."
The rest of this sum will be dedicated to update the existingERP infrastructure.

The emergence of totally new business models from an introduction of RFIDs is something people are hesitant to speak about. It is not a good habit nowadays to put technology in place first and think about further business models afterwards (besides the cost saving they aim to achieve). Obviously RFIDs will be a big deal for a better real time automated pricing. Besides that I haven't come across many other bright ideas, what could emerge. Do you have more in mind?

What company will receive the contract to supply RFID

What many in CPG don't realize is that RFID coupled with using the Internet to access that item level track and trace data will allow any node in the supply chain to do what Walmart has been doing only slightly better than everyone else. I suspect the real upshot of RFID and AutoID will not be the simply "read a bardcode at a distance" savings in the backroom but the wholly new business models and economies it will create.
