VoIP, Skype and Bluetooth
Filed in archive Technology on September 26, 2004
Oliver Thylmann investigates on VoIP solutions in Germany. I had a bit more here a while ago.
Oliver also links to a pretty polarizing statement from Michael Robertson on OmMaliks site. Honestly I guess he is underestimating the cleverness of Skype.
Meanwhile ZdNet links to a presentation of Skype on PDAs with a very talented part of the Skype sales force (she alone makes watching the demo worthwile).
One purchase question is arising for me - has anybody tried Skype on IPAQ with a Bluetooth headset? Do headsets nowadays support PDAs and PCs(my last one from Nokia would not connect to PDAs or PCs, just mobile phones)?
I appreciate any feedback... :-)

says... 'Just downloaded this Skype. Fantastic! I set it up on my laptop and iPAQ 2210, an was able to make calls between and everything. I did it on Bluetooth for the iPAQ as well! I wasn't sure the bandwidth would be high enough, but it comes through crystal clear with only a fraction of a second delay!'
Bluetooth + Skype works according to that posting.
Ramin, bandwidth is relative if we are talking about Skype - it adjusts according to your free resources. You can start with 64k for mediocre results and work your way up to crystal clear reception.
Lossless: There is no lossless compression. Something has to be eliminated but I can assure you that, if implemented correctly, VoIP won't disappoint you in comparison to standard telephony.

torsten: another point: check the social networking site - there seems to be a minor issue with the security code when posting.

Thank your very much for the feedback.
Using the Heise tool it seems the Sony Ericsson HBH-35 should work with the IPAQ.
I'll try it before I buy.
Best, TJ

Wow since Skype has published the API only some months have passed but things are developing with light speed: - The Skype Answering Machine is here - Stuart and Bill reveal how to record Skype conf calls dubbed Skypecast...

as far as i know there is a
(german) website that has listed compatibilities between bluetooth devices. see http://www.heise.de/mobil/bluetooth/db/
i have two different questions: does voip use a lossless compression? how much bandwidth does voip need?
cheers,
Ramin
