virtual conference with Richard Branson

Filed in archive Entrepreneurship on October 21, 2004

Knowledge@Wharton tries an interesting business selling online conference tickets for $99 each:

"Sir Richard branson, founder and chairman of the Virgin Group, began his business with a unique, multi-university student magazine and a small mail order record company in 1970. This humble beginning was the catalyst for the creation of Virgin Records that went on to sign major names such as The Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson and Peter Gabriel. Twenty two years later he sold Virgin Music Group-which included record labels, music publishing and recording studios-in a $1 billion deal to Thorn EMI. Ever the entrepreneur, Branson has started over 200 businesses, which have expanded into 23 countries, ranging from planes, to drinks, to investment funds, growing his label to be a $3.5 billion company. In Virgin's own words, though their growth has been fast, it is "based on developing good ideas through excellent management principles." Branson believes in keeping things simple and that people are the foundation of a corporation's success. He also believes in igniting the passion and ambition of your employees while empowering their ideas to fuel success.

Lasting LeadershipIn this session, Branson will help leaders understand the power of their people and their contributions to help launch a new venture, whether it is a new initiative or new company, and make it a sensational success."
