The numbers are stark. Only 40 VC funds raised money at all in the first quarter of 2009. A year ago 71 VC funds raised money during the first quarter. VC funds raised $4.3 billion this year compared to $7.1 billion last year.
The information comes from the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Reuters.
The numbers will serve as fodder for analysts who raise questions about the future of the VC industry in the US.

It's not surprising, given the state of the economy and drop in spending. But maybe the figures are a bit too late now. The eocnomy's on the way up, and if you compare year-on-year figures a couple of months from now, I bet the difference will be a lot les than 40% - maybe 25 or so.
