Venture capital fund raising dropped in the first quarter of 2009 based on comparisons with the same period in 2008 by almost 40%. A number of sources (Red Herring, VentureBeat, TechCrunch, PE Hub) have been covering the story.

The numbers are stark. Only 40 VC funds raised money at all in the first quarter of 2009. A year ago 71 VC funds raised money during the first quarter. VC funds raised $4.3 billion this year compared to $7.1 billion last year.

The information comes from the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Reuters.

The numbers will serve as fodder for analysts who raise questions about the future of the VC industry in the US.
