netflix in Europe
Filed in archive Venture Capital on September 17, 2003
Europe has been a little late adopting the Netflix DVD rental model. Videoisland in UK has now raised a comfortable USD 3.367 mio in the second round. I haven't heard of any bigger round for a german adopter although there are some sites up like Netleih.
#Update: web.de has started a new service with a comparable model targeting German customers.

rental market in Europe as a whole is nil-to-zero.
as DVD retail prices compared to America are much much lower also there is also less piracy in Europe if u compared dvd sales.
tv series outsell in Europe 3 to 1 vs America, it's the same thing as tivo it never came to Europe because people expect these services to be free while americans gladly pay 20/30$ a month for a closed in video recorder (really).
if you want to be in Europe you have to make people owner of the stuff they buy, renting in generally just doesn't function outside the UK/America (the UK is allot more like America in that sense, overpaying for nothing).
so you might see it in the UK but nowhere else in Europe really, as prices for rent are too close to retail dvd prices.
