is outsourcing modern slavery?

Filed in archive Global Economy on September 24, 2003

Wired has sent a reporter to a technology tradeshow TechxNY in New York City and they discovered a "modern slavery market". :-)
The trade show has specialized in showcasing outsourcing providers from all over the world. The various locations including unusal ones like Nepal show that the globalization of IT realted value adding process is still progressing strongly. Apparently the offer is interesting:
"These folks are offering someone to do virtually everything any business might need done, for amazingly low fees," said Fred Shriver, a Manhattan computer repair consultant. "I knew that customer support was moving out of this country, but I didn't realize that stuff like graphics design, payroll and sales could be outsourced, too."
