Entrepreneur's David Javitch had a blog post a couple of weeks ago now that's stuck with me. He looks at five questions any business owner/manager needs to consider in the current economic climate. and they all have to do with employee relations.
You don't have to draw the same conclusions as Javitch does. But if you're wise, you'll at least consider the questions.

Your employees need you most when times are tough. Know how to talk to them-whether the news is good or bad.The questions:
- How should I manage and lead differently in light of the economy?
- How often should I communicate the status of the company to employees?
- Should I allow my employees to participate in these information sessions?
- Should I give my employees a heads up about layoffs, work furloughs, etc.?
- How should I communicate bad news?
You don't have to draw the same conclusions as Javitch does. But if you're wise, you'll at least consider the questions.

You tell them early, and then make sure they do the work in the interim, whether through an add-on bonus, or by threatening an immediate layoff if they slack off.
But you have to give a decent period between intimation and layoff.
