Germany in the lead
Filed in archive Global Economy by tj on November 4, 2003
Berlin is apparently the first major city broadcasting TV only digital. Singapore has had DVB-T for a while now, but Berlin has shut down any analog transmission over the air since August 2003. This may become a major competition to cable as it serves roughly the same selection of channels at much lower costs. The New York Times has contributed a good article to the issue.

"The switch to digital is under way in other German cities, including Cologne, Hannover and Dusseldorf. By next May, Reimers said, digital signals will reach 23 million of Germany's 82 million people. By 2010, he predicted, "Germany will be analog-free."
