Jeffrey Nolan links to a nice piece about RFIDs.
"Myth 3: The 5 cent tagSorry, but there is no 5 cent tag today. Tech Center estimates that a 5 cent tag is possible today---for a single purchase order of between 700 billion and 1 trillion tags! In 2003, Tech Center was able to provide a price of just under $1 for an inquiry request of 25 million tags, which is (at present) a more common large order size."

I don't think anyone was seriously suggesting you could get 5 cent tags now. At least within the AutoID center the '5 cent' meme assumed full RFID deployment and that it would be the lowest price you'd get by simple economies of scale. Further price reductions would then happen by simple technology maturation.

Well, you are right, it's more a good piece of insight, but shouldn't be taken too serious for the predictions.
