Sun Microsystems has announced a much worser outlook for 2004. Sun now expects to post a loss of 7 to 10 cents a share for the first quarter of 2004.

"Sun, based in Mountain View, Calif., continues to lose market share to Dell and I.B.M. as corporate information technology managers desert Sun's proprietary servers for products based on the industry-standard Intel chips. Brent A. Bracelin, an analyst with Pacific CREST Securities, said the company was quickly losing server sales to systems running the Linux open source operating system."So far no surprise; but now I much better understand, why Sun is willing to risk a complete detoriation of prices with another network computer model. This time they want to enable the server side and deliver utility computing incl. soft-and hardware on a flat rate pricing. Read more in the Economist.
