ALDI the famous Germany based retail chain has lately ventured into the eastern part of the US. aldi is well known for high quality private label products and it's policy of total intransparency. Almost no financial data from this symbol of Germany's economy are available. Now incredibly enough one 8 year old strategy paper (in German only) is available. It gives some nice insight about retail markets and private label vs. known brand strategies from ALDI's perspective.

Hey there, How to you contact them? I have been trying to find a corporate office email or snail mail address, to comment on a sarcastic employee who was actually slam dunking my food into my cart...unacceptable unless she was going to pay for it. They are impossible to call or contact. Customer service is definately NOT high on their agenda.

I think ALDI is not exactly interested in talking to its customers. Customer service is non-existing to slash prices :)

TJ ,
There is no contact info on aldifoods.com. All they give is an address. I don't want to waste a stamp. I prefer email, but Aldi does not have one listed. I even tried a generic help@aldi & custserv@aldi 2 no avail.
It is frustrating that they do ot want to hear from us. Ignoring customers( as they do not have to answer phones & keep records I am guessing ) really keeps their prices low?
I did find this # 1-708-879-2130, but it was on a press release bc of a recall.

My grandpa found a crunch in his chili and grandma found a phone number on a different product from aldi. maybe two weeks later they got a knock on the door, it was fed ex or something, they had a couple VERY large boxes of food. I just opened a bad can of mixed veggies and tried the aldi site for a phone number or email and found tj's site instead, thought i'd add my 2cents. I don't see how it can be legal to have no way to contact them. What if I got deathly ill and was dying in the hospital? How would my family notify them? I will definately be checking this out!

Follow up to my complaint issue:
The next day, after my run in with the extremely rude clerk I went into the store to ask for the phone number of the corporate offices. The Manager was not there, but the Assistant Manager was and she gave it to me. There is a district office about 50 miles north of here. It was a Saturday and I was going to call on Monday. But, the next day the store Manager called me and we discussed the problem. I told her I work in a customer service related field and you just can't talk to customers that way and expect to stay in business. She agreed with me, and told me she would talk with the clerk and let the district Manager know what happened at the store. I hope she did. I did not hear anything more, and actually have been back very little since then. Only other real place to shop here is Wally World, so............

I work for Aldi food and, yes we do have a phone number but we are forbidden to give it out.
As an added note, they are great about making things right if you do have a problem. Another note...It is a great company to work for as far as pay and benefits but it is so typical and maybe more so, of many retail, they work you to the bone. I have been there for three years and I would not recommend this job to anyone !! You have no life !! I am looking for other work before I kill myself mentally and physically !

I'm absolutely furious - spent £52+ in Aldi's in Wishaw today - took my bags out to the car only to discover that the ink on one bag hadn't set and I was covered in it! Ruined a new top and jeans. Went back in and the manager just sat at the till & told me there was nothing he could do. I shamed him into letting me use the restroom to clean up before getting into my car and he told me to call the number on the receipt about my stained clothes - guess what? no number on the receipt! I'm going back tomorrow I'll let you know what happens. I'm so angry - I've spent the best part of an hour trying to find a number for Aldi online and I found this blog.

This is total BS! I too have had a horrible experience shopping at Adli! The snotty checkout girl looked at me and said " I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO REMOVE YOUR ITEMS FROM THE BOX MYSELF" Poor thing had to stand up from her chair to do it, and as she was doing it she was THROWING my items! I looked at her and said There is no no need to throw my items in that manner! She then decided to argue with me. SO UNPROFFESIONAL!! I AM WRITING THEM A LETTER!!

I was concerned that Aldi's had discontinued their large twisted 'Clancy's' pretzels. When I asked the manager, a personal friend, about this he advised me that he had had at least 60 other complaints on the same issue and advised me to write the Co. I did so and three weeks later I received a reply letter which did not address ANY of my concerns. I wrote back 4 weeks ago and have yet to get a reply. The 630-879-8100 phone # will get you to their U.S. corporate office where you can complain about their total lack of customer concern after you have paid and walk out the door. 05/25/2007

I work for a nonprofit in the US and price is a big deal when shopping for supplies for big events. I was putting hot dog buns in my cart - 32 pkgs of the about 60 I needed - when the "manager" told me I could only buy 10 of anything at a time and I had to call to place an order at least a week in advance. Would sure like to know how to do that when there is NO PUBLISHED PHONE NUMBER anywhere for a specific store. Now I want to take some hot dog buns back...could be interesting!!!

Hey Grace, hope you found another job because although most people think aldi pays well it does not come close to what is deserved given the fact you are a cashier, janitor, maintenace person, cash register fixer, floor scrubber and so on. and by the way for all those who want to contact aldi it's not even worth it. people have purchase digital camera that had issues and didn't know how or where to get replacement parts. watch those refrigerated goods, with such a limited staff I know how long it takes some of those refrigerated good to actually make it to the refrigerator. Poor customer service, you're probably right. besides that they have a couple of discrimination charges against them. who in the heck wants to work or shop with a company like that. I had to fight them in a department of labor hearing just to get my vacation pay they took from me. so, good luck grace on your job hunting even a lesser paying job is better than the crap aldi dishes out.

Hi TJ, Thanks for this weblog. I went to Aldi's this morning, and was very unhappy too, about the service from the cashier. She was honestly shoving the food into the basket from the counter as she passed it by the scanner. canned item landed on my vegetables and he THREW the breadinto the car. It is a good thing I put the bread at the end of the conveyor, and I didn't buy eggs. Imagine the mess that would have been. I was tempted to leave the basket there without paying. I don't think the food there is that great of a value in the first place, and if it is dented, bruised, and smashed by the time I get to the door of the store, then it is even less of a bargain. I will not shop there again. I woud rather pay a little more for better service and undamaged food. Unless I go in there just to fill up a cart and leave it there for them to put all that damaged food back on the shelves. I think if people stop shopping there they will relize that they need to make some kind of change.
Thanks for allowing us all to vent. Thanks for the phone numbers listed. I WILL CALL.

I have read all your comments with interest, and am sorry there seems to be so many people unhappy with Aldi's.
My personal experience with Aldi's has always been superb. The cashiers are courteous. They put the food in the cart neatly (they pack better than I do and I'm constantly amazed at how they do it with such speed.)
The food is usually top quality. Admittedly, I have encountered spoiled vegetables, but I've bought meat at Harris Teeter that was rotten when I opened the package, so I am not surprised to see some spoilage anywhere. And Aldi's meat has always been great.
The prices and the quality outstrip what can be found in practically any store in our town. If the variety is smaller, and the lack of customer support low, then those are prices I am willing to pay for the low cost of their product.
I hope all the problems you are having are resolved, and that I continue to have as satisfactory a shopping experience as I have always had.
Sincerely,
P. Witherspoon

My wife just trashed the under-carriage of our Bravada on an unmarked curb in the parking lot thats only in one space, no curbs in the other spaces in line. It ripped the Transmission Cross-Member apart, shoved the Tranny into the body pan enough to tilt the engine into the fan shroud. Yeah! All on a curb, Id hate to see what it would do to a sedan. You cant see the curb pulling out, theres no markings, bushes, reflectors, nothing! The number I was given was "724-355-77508" Wow! Must be a number in Germany! After trying many combinations of that jabbered mess, I called the Manager of the store in Olean, NY. he was rude, obnoxious and still learning English-and we give them our money>? Used to be once a week, never again! They denied responsibility and thats why Im here, was searching for a number or site to contact them which now I understand why I couldnt find anything. I took pictures of this curb and no exaggeration, there has to be 50 gouges and scrapes on this cement curb with chunks of cement laying all over the blacktop. You cannot see it and they are resposible. See you in court Mt ALDIS!

Thanks for this site. My local Aldi's does a pretty fair job of being courteous and gentle with my groceries. To answer an earlier question, I've never seen any middle-aged people working there. It's only young people, and they look very tired at all times.
I think it's an absolute INSULT to every customer they have or ever hope to have, that they are not reachable by email or a toll-free number! How can you hold yourself out as a major retail corporation and not provide for feedback on a website? It's a huge and glaring defect, and I find it totally unacceptable.
So many small problems and comments could be fielded from the website without further effort on the company's part or the customer's end as well.
Of course, it would cost a few precious dollars to staff an online customer service point, but considering the customers permanently leaving because of this inconsiderate stance on Aldi's part; it would be worth the investment! Merle

I just want to call the store and see if they have a key that I lost. Can't call and it is a key to a building where we rent an office. The key access the whole building. Now I have to drive 7 miles one way just to ask and probably be told no they don't have it. Other than that have had mostly good experiences but this really stinks!

Coming from a wide variety of retail jobs I can tell you that customer service cost billions a year. Customers on a daily basis abuse retail companies by returning used goods, complaining on events that never existed and using those situations to receive free goods. Thats what drives the cost of goods up. Until everyone relizes this, the cost of goods will keep going up and "theives" will keep complaining!

I am a former slave of Aldi. It was the worst experience of my life !!! I am a seasoned manager and have never been treated like such a worthless piece of crap! I was motivated by the money five years ago and everytime I saw a posting I applied. When I was finally selected I did my best to stay with them. Until you've worked for them you will never know the pressures. As an employee you are required to ring 50 items a min. so while customers think cashiers are being rude, it's because they can and will be written up if they don't meet this speed. I was a manager trainee, which meant they owned me. If I didn't "Box" the store correctly the night before I would get called at 5 in the morning to be yelled at and told I had to come back to the store to correct it. Keep in mind the night before I left, I did everything in my power to "box" correctly. You can also be written up for staying past the time you are scheduled. So it makes it almost impossible if something happens that thows you off like an entire pallet of approx. 100 glass bottles of turkey gravy spills on the floor!!! But they don't care about that because chances are the store manager is a pshyco path that has someone breathing down their neck telling them to act that way cause of course they make 65,000 a year. I personally think Aldi only hires 20 somethings because that's all I saw. I'm in my thirties with a young child which is a disaterous combination. They had absolutly no respect when it came to my family. No matter what I tried to do to bust my ass, nothing was good enough and the minute I thought I was doing a good job someone was always there saying how much I F'd up on something else. they compliment only slightly but when you mess up it's the worst you can do. I worked there for one year and within that time I lost 25 pounds due to stress and being overworked. I almost got divorced, my kid started acting like a nut due to the fact that I was never home. Working at Aldi is like being in Germany during the days of Hitler, being worked to the bone is an understatement so the next time you visit the store and have a bad experience remember that the one cashier or manager that is working there may have already been there 12 hours has probably had their foot run over by a pallet jack, been yelled at three times and is getting ready to compromise Aldis "prioity one" Customer Safety due to the fact that no one will be safe when they blow!

it seems this is an Aldi bashing blog, which I would have been happy to bash them back in 2003 when we had just moved to Germany and I shopped at one. The clerk was practically throwing our goods at us. Well, we learned that you have to stand at the end of the counter and grab your items as soon as they are scanned and then you quickly place them in your basket for bagging LATER. Once we learned the system, we loved going there, but the first experience, due only to our ignorance was awful. Now that I am back in teh U.S. I want an Aldi here in Arizona, but there is none. So that is where I am with Aldi. I love Trader Joe's and they are owned by the same people, only they bag your groceries and talk to you, unlike Aldi. They are quite different experiences.

ALDI HAS ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY HIDE BEHIND EX DIRECTORY NUMBERS. WHEN YOU FIND A NUMBER AND PHONE YOU GET A RUDE AS RUDE WOMAN SAYING ''YOU CANT EXPECT CHEAP FOOD AND PEOPLE TO ANSWER THE PHONES' WELL SORRY WOMAN I WANTED TO ASK A QUESTION OF MY LOCAL ALDI RATHER THAN WASTE PETROL DRIVING UP THERE TO FIND THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE ITEM I WANTED. DONT SHOP AT ALDI - I SAY - IF THEY DONT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER (AND FROMONLINE SITES ALL I SEE IS COMPLAINTS ABOUT CHEAP AND NASTY TAT SOLD) THEN LETS GIVE OUR HARD EARNED PENNIES TO SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY MIGHT CARE MORE THAN NOTHING!

hello, all. i too work for aldi's, and have read alot of the complaints that are on here. first, as far as the rudeness to customers, that is not allowed at all. each of these people that you have incountered are taking it upon themselves to act as such. most of these problems, if brought to the manager, or person in charge, can and will be handled on the spot. if not, go to the next nearest store and contact that manager. that is why there is so little info on contacting a home office, because the store managers are able to handle all of these problems and more. as a sub asst mgr, i wouldn't let any of you leave my store without making sure you were happy with the results. i don't know what kind of people you are running into, but as an employee, i know better than to treat people as such. as far as some of the complaints towards to products themselves, bring them back to the store for a refund. you will get your money back, and another of that same product free. i've had people bring back bananas that they left in thier car for days by accident, and have swapped them out, no fuss, no muss. ok, i did kid her about it, but all in good fun. the jobs there are so easy and so rewarding. i know how you feel, and i'm sorry you had that type of incounter at a company that i'm proud to work for. if i ever see one of you in my store, trust me, you will be taken care of. i'm the type of person that will give you the quarter for the cart, or buy your bags for you if your short. that is how it's supposed to be done. it sounds to me that alot of these short comings need to be blamed and aimed at the store managers. aldis' does care about the customer service. they care about what your think and experience, but they also trust thier management team to take care of thier customers. to me, manners are what your taught by your parents, and should follow you everywhere. there is no excuse for bad manners at all. trust me, we are not over worked and under paid at all, so that can't even be an excuse.
again, i'm soo very sorry about your negative experience with these stores. but if you do see me, i'll be the one having fun, and making sure to brighten your day just a little bit more.
thank you for your input and concerns, i hope this helps you.

Hey there BOBBY! - I'm glad you had an awesome experience working for Aldi, toodles to you. Chances are you have'nt worked for them long, don't have any children (or your wife/girlfriend raises them (solely)), or your store manager knows what they are doing thus alleviating stress on the workers. Either way lucky you! My time there was a living hell! Before I started working there I was recognized for being a top notch manager, with excellent customer service, and an extremely hard worker. Working there made me disgruntled. In the ten years I've worked in retail I never had such a bad experience, I seriously thought I was going to blow! Leaving there was the best thing I could have done, I regained my sanity and personality. I'm no stranger to hard work so don't think I'm some lazy ass looking to get paid for doing nothing, I would stay in the sub below freezing (the freezer) temperatures for 3 to 4 hours when no body else wanted to do it without complaint but those kind of things didn't seem to matter to them. I take my work ethics personally and do the best that I can at what ever I do! Working there brought tears like no job should I would have nightmares regularly. Making 19.38 an hour doesn't matter when you go home and wonder if you are going to be called at 5 in the morning to be yelled at. It was almost like if you became too content or "happy" someone would make it a point to tell you "oh, you did good on that, but you REALLY F'D UP ON THIS" they make light of your successes and make you feel like such a failure when you make a mistake! Working for Aldi is not for everyone, I might suggest someone that doesn't have a close family, or young children. Who might have been in the service, and doesn't care about someone screaming at you .. oh yeah and who can hold your pee for 9 hours on end because you don't have enough time or staff to use the bathroom ! GOOD LUCK !

I totally agree with "Hitler Reigns!" I also worked for Aldi as a "manager in training." Aldi says that customer service is a number-ONE priority, that is a crock. Aldi does not care about customers or employees for that matter. It is all about the bottom line.
Half ass and FAST is all they want. My Store Manager was not concerned about customer service, sanitation of the store, or even, correct handling of product. He actually spoke to me about "lowering my standards!"
The only time sanitation is an issue, is when, "the Germans are coming!"
I even thought that was a rude comment. "Germans are coming." At Aldi, that means that the Guys that OWN ALDI are coming for a visit. Customers should notice when a German visit is happening. MANY HOURS are spent Cleaning the Aldi House and making SURE EVERYTHING IS PERFECT for the visit.
After the visit, no bother, the store goe back to being dirty.
Are customers IGNORANT OR WHAT? If the store YOU are shopping at is DIRTY, You should expect POOR PRODUCT HANDELING AS WELL.
TOO MANY TIMES I SAW FROZEN FOOD PRODUCTS BEING LEFT OUT, AND THEN STOCKED!
I can't believe customers would even shop at Aldi. The lines are long. The cashiers are so stressed about meeting the "item per minute" goals. Cashiers don't give a crapp. They throw things, just to get the customer OUT!
My Store Manager was a DISORGANIZED SLOB! He looked like he slept in his clothes. He had body odor issues.
I am GLAD that I no longer work for Aldi. However, it was a "learning experience" for Me.

I visited a brand new Aldi's in North Carolina today. I was shocked they only took cash and debit cards I'd never heard of. This is in a wealthy suburb of Raleigh where you would find 50-100 cars in the Trader Joe's parking lot. I knew I needed a few things so ventured in. I had a bag with me yet no quarter so decided to only buy what I could carry. The lone cashier was rude. There was only 3-4 shoppers in the store, so she did not need to rush. The prices were good and everything appeared fresh but it had only been open a week. I think there are some items I will regularly buy (shelf stable items). The no-frills customer service thing will not work well here, IMHO. The guy behind me was freaking out that the cashier was putting his items into the same cart that my items had been dumped into. She did not give me 5 seconds to put my 4 items into the bag I had brought with me.
The best deal was probably the 1.99 package of frozen asparagus spears.

Hi everyone, I was just hired at Aldi and am supposed to begin work in a couple weeks. I was just searching the web to find out more info on Aldi's, and after reading this blog, I have become very nervous about working there. I also have a young son and wanted to work at Aldi's because of the high wages and insurance benefits, but now I'm wondering if it's worth it. I am a hardworker, but do not work well with people yelling at me or constantly degrading me. Are all Aldi's like this? Also, why do they hire 90% females? I found this strange, isn't that discrimination?

In responce to getting a job there, I am a 42 yr old woman who was hired there as a picker in their warehouse. Good pay and benefits but extremely hard work even in their stores..you need to load or unload pallets of everything that they they sell..from food to plants to electronics, wooden furniture..They have a good pay scale and benefits but its not worth your back giving out before its time..and very fast paced..you need to be avail. 7 days a week and there is not an ending time to your day...so if you have kids its hard because of child care, thats why there is a high turn around of staff...There are some older ones but they just sit on a forklift or man behind the desks...you need to be in your 20's to do this job, cause by their 40's they are done. also to the comment men are mostly in management women do the brunt of hard labor there. You need to be physically fit, not even slightly overweight and have a great back and knees. I only lasted 6 months...I just chalked it up as a life experience.

Physical work is good for the body,if work doesn't tear down your body sugar & lack of exercise will. The cashier is not your SERVANT she is there to take your money for the merchandise YOU WANT to purchase..YOU are to BAG YOUR OWN GROCERIES. Discount are for workers not for the pampered affluent, which is what most people are in the U.S. Sensible Reasonable fair complaints are resolvable at the store level. If not don't expect any retailer to be God OR your mommy, watch where you park and how you drive. Watch your clothes to not stain them. Be an Adult.Live with the fact that life is not perfect. Every Retailer spruces up when owners come. AND people hire people that they can communicate with thus they hire people like themselfs. Try to be like them if you want to work for them. I'm a double minority and have worked at several non food retailers, I have worked retail and Mgmt for the last 50yrs Negative people r whiny children. Be an ADULT and a problem solver. I have been eating Millville instant oatmeal for over a year and a half and it does work for lowering LDL. However, recently one of the flavors in the variety pack has changed. Can you find out what Millville did to the Apple Cinnamon? The first time we had the apparently new version my kitchen and living room smelled like perfume spray and the taste wasn't far from that. This last box hasn't been so bad but I am very curious as to what the change was. Here is code on box 3 BEST By FEB 06 10S (MI0139CT)

Considering the quality of the merchandise and the company is global there may not be a specific reason other than what it would cost to hire persons to address complaints. At these prices with job losses, Americans do Aldi, Walmart & sometimes Trader Joe has a good price on something edible.
About rude clerks: I'm real pleased to read thy are paid well but they DO DO-IT-ALL! The store near me is one of the smaller ones and the workers seem intense. The workers in the several stores I've frequented around here appear somewhat drained or harried and this is in a southern somewhat slower moving area from that of NY or NJ where I was raised.
Consider the money-saving steps the store has -
pay for cart: store does have to hire someone to collect carts.
no shelves - using boxes as shelves that morph into customer food baskets when near empty. Less for store to discard from shopping area.
The quality and cuts of their meats is superior to any other store I have tried. I've lived in most to the greater NorthEast seaboard of USA and love to cook and eat so I'm familiar with numerous food stores. Family visiting recently, came with me to ALDI - and they were surprised at the meat value - one has traved this whole country, the other an international traveller.)
Most of their canned products are as good as the name brands or better with a lower price.
Hon actually got the Medion computer for about $500. A desk top with 320GB and loads of other sweet features - and they Do ofer and stand by that product!
Guess I'm saying considering the savings and the fact ALDI workers are truly WORKED - I try to be helpful and establish good communication with the workers in my local store.
Another point - used to go to the store in Asheville. This evening right before closing, some man went into the back of the stored - while this 18yr old was on the register - alone.I was one of the last customers and she was waiting for law enforcement to arrive. They pulled into the driveway - did a U-turn and drove away. I stayed until we got the police in the store. Still no guard hired for the store.
These are things workers are faced with today. So good luck to all.

In response to New Hire, don't worry about it. I have been working at Aldi for about 4 months now. This is mainly a complaint bored so naturally it is going to sound scary but it is pretty easy. Just work with the customers that are not happy. There are really not that many upset customers. And if you are afraid of the work it isn't that bad if you really are a hard worker. This is the easiest cash flow i have ever had because i am used to much more physical labor than stocking shelves, running a cash register, and cleaning up the store.

I have attended about 10 job fairs in the past year and have had no interview. I have experience, the availability and this alleged personality that they somehow think they can pick up in the 2 minutes that some district person talks to you for.
Ive been told by store managers that i cannot be hired through the store only through the fairs. Im getting very frustrated at the whole situation, I even make up a cover letter and resume to be a freakin cashier for the 10th job fair i was at yesterday!
is there something im missing?, is there some thing they look at that i dotn know about and so am just wasting my time?
I plan on calling the district office or whatever tomorrow to see if they have any answers

When I first went into Aldi today 7/2/08 it was 7:30pm. The lady with short blonde hair who I assume was the manager was sweeping the floor and running over customer's feet and would not move or say excuse me. I was getting the Gerneric Juciy Juice and there were 2 bottles left when I got my 2 bottles out, and this same lady (short blonde hair) came over and started moving the remaining juices out of the box like she was just so annoyed. This was very rude! So I continued to shop and when I got to the check out counter my cashier by the name of Donna threw her closed sign at the end of my items and almost hit me in the face with it. She rang me up and low and behold I was using an EBT card and my funds were not loaded onto the card, I imagine because my dates had got changed and had not gone into effect. But for whatever reason the funds were not there. Donna was so annoyed it showed. She said to me, "You mean to tell me that you don't have any other means of paying for these items?" By that time I was annoyed by all this attitude. I said no! So the short haired blonde lady came up and was like you know you could have prevented this if you would have just came up here and checked your balance before you started shopping. I said well it doesn't matter, it's not a problem just void the whole thing and I'll take a few items. By that time she had walked off in anger because she had to come void my items. Donna continued to say now I gotta put all these items back, so I guess the company will have to pay me overtime! I paid for my items and she did not say thank you, come back again or nothing.
Train their staff to be customer service oriented!
I really feel discrimated against.

I was in ALDI (Bonner Str. Bad Godesberg Branch) this weekend with my family, ALDI has become our main store for shopping every weekend, not only because the prices are reasonable but accessible as well. I understand ALDI is an international establishment, which means management has put up open minded, well oriented employees towards the sensitivity of other citizens. I am a Filipino married to a German, travelled the globe and now decided to make Germany our second home.
I write for the reason that I wish to complain with reference to what happened this weekend, your cashier (Frau Solowski – I was not able to get the complete name, but I am sure there a ski is on her last name) was rude and not as well a well oriented employee. I wish to change my 10 euro bill since I need 1 euro coin for my cart, I asked her politely, if I could changed it she answered back “hab’ ich nicht!” and continue to pretend I don’t exist, I said “ wie bitte?” then she exchanged my 10 euro bill slammed it in front of me, in front of other customers… what can I say I am not rude. I thought she might be a tired, or maybe a racist, or maybe just simply don’t love her job. In the Philippines most of the establishment have the policy that the “customer is always right”.
I hope the management will act into this. In America where we last lived, the employees at the grocery stores smile to the customers, they are polite regardless of your skin, here some employees are so stressed out in their job… joy in the workplace is important.

I think a lot of the comments here have to do with disgruntled employees. Unfortunately, you are going to have disgruntled employees anywhere you go. It sucks, but it's true. I'm disgruntled right now (granted, I work hard not to be rude, but some people don't have composure, which I seem to be running out of these days), but I make it work. I'm so disgruntled, I've been looking for a new job, which is why I've applied with Aldi for a district manager position. With regards to people saying they haven't heard back/what's the timeline, I applied online on Sunday (9/7) and have been invited to an in-person interviewing event which will take place on 9/25 (I heard back yesterday (9/8) with a confirmation that they received my application and were forwarding it to the district near me, and today (9/9) about the in-person interview). So, you should hear back relatively quickly. I know, some of you are probably thinking "are you young?". I am, but I have 2 years experience in supply chain and logistics (both sales and operations for UPS/UPS Supply Chain Solutions), so I think that my experience might have something to do with me being contacted for further interviews. I would like to think that they are hiring younger individuals due to the fact that they are more physically capable of doing a lot of the heavy lifting/manual labor there, not based on looks/age/etc. However, I'm not about to say that I wasn't hired at my last job because of the way I hold myself/dress/look on the job. In sales, presence and dressing for success are a top priority, and I'm sure that is what they are expecting of any employee. This may be the situation with people not being called for another interview round. I don't mean to sound demeaning, or like I am being discriminatory, but "dressing for success" and looking the part are extremely important, and if you don't fit, you likely will not get a call back.

To Candy and Hitler: you guys are right on the money. When I was reading your entry (Hitler) my mouth was hung open because I thought that I had written it myself. I am a four year slave of Aldi. I've been an assistant manager all four years. IT SUCKS!! I have never contemplated suicide more times in my life than I have over the last four years. I, like everyone else, am a hard worker...dedicated, reliable...I mean I've been there four years and the only time I ever called in was three years ago when I was in a car accident and was in the hospital overnight...and, yes, you guessed it, I was in trouble with the district manager for calling in. What I want people to understand is that there is NO excuse for any employee to treat customers anything less than respectful. It's just the way you have to be when you work in customer service. HOWEVER, I, too, have been in situations where I am pressured about how many hours I spend in the store and I get so carried away with my work that when a customer interrupts me I literally panic becuase me helping them for five minutes means five more minutes I have to spend in the store...not working...I don't mind working, but the big shot managers have this unrealistic expectation of productivity and after four years, all I can do is laugh. Fortunate for me I was injured and had to be off for a year or so. It's really sad...employees are so much happier when they're sick or injured, because that's one less day that they have to spend at that dreaded place. The pressure is UNBELIEVABLE. It's the kind of pressure that you would think only the President of the United States would have, but noooooo, they think because they pay you $21 that they own you. You can't have day care issues, you can't get sick...or if you do get sick you are expected to plan your illness or just work through it. You can't go to school, they think they own you. They're so jealous that they don't want you holding any other jobs or going to school. That's why all employees have to be available from 5am to 10pm seven days a week! Only single people with no life can appreciate this kind of schedule. For those of you who are trying to get hired, if you haven't heard from them they are not going to hire you. You can call and write and email whomever you wish, but it's just not going to happen. When I applied for the job, I wasn't even looking for a job...I'd taken my mother the apply for a part-time job there and when I saw that they were hiring manager, my mom told me to apply. Now it was at an open house, it was about 95 degrees that day and I had on a mini skirt and a spaghetti strap tank top and filp flops. I filled out the app, spoke to the young, cute district manager for about one minute and two days later he called me for an interview. By the end of the week I had the job. That's how it happens. I was 30, but I looked about 22. I have that huge, corny, toothy smile that makes people love me and I think that's why I got the job. Can you believe in my interview with the regional director, he actually asked me what my workout regime was. LOL! Also, he told me that I was dressed too nice to be applying for that job. (I wore a black business suit) So basically, if you're female young, pretty, strong-looking and can convince them that Aldi will be your life, then guess what? YOU'RE HIRED! Otherwise, just keep on searching. When they have open houses at my store I just shake my head at all of the prospects, especially the men who will NEVER get hired as a cashier. My store has been open for almost 15 years and there has NEVER been a male cashier EVER and only 4 or 5 male managers. It is DEFINITELY a female embraced job. HOW SEXIST IS THAT????? Like Hitler, I too lost about 25 pounds the first three or four months I worked there. I was a size 10 when I applied and I was a size 2 just three months later. You forget to eat, or you have sleep for dinner, you work until 10:00 one night, but you have to be right back at work a 5:00 in the morning, so when do you eat? Well you don't because you have to work 5a-3p, but you won't get off until about 4 or 5, then you go home, sleep through dinner and sleep until the next day and get up and do it all over again. I don't have children, but a lot of my staff do and it's really sad because other people are raising their children. I have to agree that the pay is great. Where else can a person with only a high school diploma or GED make $50,000+, get company paid medical, dental, vision, 401K, STD, LTD, etc. Oh, but did I fail to mention, you only get one week vacation until you've been there two years, then you get two and we only get three sick days and two personal days. OUTRAGEOUS!!! I know I'm going on, but this place is not the best place to work and those of you who are trying so hard to get in, just as I did, STOP IT! YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF FOR THIS!
P.S. FOR EVERYONE-NEVER EVER EAT ANYTHING THAT IS FROZEN OR REFRIGERATED...IT HAS BEEN SITTING OUT FOR HOURS BEFORE IT WAS PUT ON THE SHELF. ONE PERSON IS REQUIRED TO STOCK 10-12 PALLETS OF HUNDRES OF CASES AND IT TAKES A FAST WORKER ABOUT FOUR HOURS TO STOCK ALL OF IT. SO YOUR FOOD HAS BEEN SITTING OUT FOR AT LEAST FOUR HOURS. BE AWARE!!!

I am sorry that all of you are so angry about how you are treated by cashiers, but let me give you some insight.
Every day my "stats" go up in the office by the time clock, and are sent weekly to the district manager.
These are the MINIMUMS:
Items scanned per minute: 48
Time between customers: 7 seconds
Cashout time: 30 seconds
Every time one of us talks about how the customers hate the throwing of groceries, the assembly line impersonal service, the district manager tells us, "well, you can slow down if they complain."
I am written up and in danger of losing my job when my numbers fall below the targets above.
That said, trying to get someone fired from their job because you are annoyed or in a snit ("she didn't speak to me nicely" or "she made me take my own things out of the box") is very very bad karma. It will come back to you.
If you don't like business practices of a store, go somewhere else.
Is that difficult for people to understand?
**All of the people at my store are women over the age of 35, black and white. Many of our applicants are unbelievably inept at applying. When you apply,
Smile, shake hands, have some energy.
Don't ask for a pen. Bring a pen.
Don't talk on your cellphone.
Don't bring your children or boyfriend/girlfriend.
Don't come in shorts and a tshirt.
Don't say, "I want to work here because you all sit down." We sit down after we unload trucks from 5:30 am until 9 am when the store opens. We sit down before we spend 2 hours cleaning the store after we close.
We sit down so that we have leverage to sling groceries at 48 ipms.
If you have any kind of physical problem, forget it. You cannot work at Aldi. Even if you hurt yourself on the job, they will find a way to fire you.

You went into a store, handled their products, had the cashier ring up your purchases, and then said,"Gee, I don't have any money".
The responsibility to know how much money you have to spend is pretty universal. To say that this is some kind of discrimination boggles the mind.
If you had to pay for your groceries with real money, instead of a card that gives you free food, you would be very mindful of how much money you had.

I have a friend working at an ALDI supermarket as a cashier. She told me that the payment is significantly higher than in other supermarkets but you have to be very, very fast. And that's true, the cashiers at ALDI work normally are very fast so that the waiting time at the checkout is very short.

Wow! I now understand why the cashiers are rude and throw things in the cart, even when I am there with a box waiting to catch what she's slinging! It also explains why she isn't smiling. SHE AIN'T HAPPY!
I had considered working here, because I've been out of work for 2 years and need to contribute along with my husband.
I LOVE SHOPPING AT ALDI, but I don't think I'd even like working here. $10.00 an hour (Florida, USA) isn't worth what I'm hearing you have to put up with. LIFE IS SHORT. WE make our own decisions about where to work. Thank God my husband has a job. If not, I would definitely put up with the crap until I could get out. With this economy being so bad, and jobs hard to find, it's hard not to take something like this, but I'll be honest... I've had my fair share of bad jobs... I have paid my dues... then I found a good job and swore I'd never go back to waitressing, telemarketing, Wal-Mart, customer service. I have too many nightmares about those jobs. So, until I absolutely have to, I'm not going to work at Aldi. Your SANITY and SERENITY has to come first. Good luck to all.

Obviously everyone's experience is different. We have 3 Aldi's within a 20 min drive of my home. We have never had a problem with the employees or their customer service. The employees have always been nice and polite (perhaps that's because we live in the south :)) Several of the stores have clerks that are in their 40's. One was even 57. She told us it was her birthday. We bought a air compressor from them about a year ago. It quit working after 3 months. My husband took it back (with the receipt) and got our money back immediately. Sometimes you have to remember where you are shopping. There is no excuse for bad behavior but to expect to be treated like a supermarket is being unrealistic. The store is a no frills store. You should expect that. Most people going in know that you will have to bag your own items etc. Yes, the cashiers are fast but that doesn't mean you can't help them put the items in your cart. Yes I stand at the end of my cart and rearrange it but considering the type of store this is I expect to do that. If I want to be pampered I'd go to a supermarket chain. I go there because of the prices. I no it's a no frill store so I expect it to be a no frill store. Yes, as american's we are too pampered. No one is telling you to be a customer of Aldi's and yes there are legitimate complaints. Aldi's have never represented itself as anything other than a no frills store. If you have a problem take it to the manager. I've never left Aldi's where my complaint wasn't handled there and then. Yes I have found somethings wrong when I get home, I take it back and address it at the store. They are no frills and will it hurt me to drive back to the store. No, we are just used to being babied and expect to have our way in everything. Grow up.

I am not here to diss Aldi's. But I do have to say that today, I was making a special meal that included sweet kernel corn. When I opened the can, it was cream corn. This has happened to me five times. I thought it was a mistake on my part, but nope. It wouldn't make me stop shopping there, but when I did some research and found out that the number is forbidden...it makes me a little concerned. I wanted to notify them that they have looked over something.
I DID find a number.

I just got to this by accident and have just this to say. What a bunch of complainers we all are , whine and whine we do. Nothing is fast or cheap enough. Get a life, go shopping, customer service is far overrated these days. Before you all ask that everybody is super friendly ALL the time, remember how you are treating other people, private or during your job. Yes, I am sure that is not always great either.
So stop complaining, enjoy the reasonable prices and great items at Aldi an go on with your lives. E-mail and yes these web sides encourage us to complain a lot, myself included.

Working at ALDI is very, very hard work and can often be stressful. However, all of us were fully aware of this fact when we accepted the job, and after we had completed the training. Customer service is not ALDI's priority, but because of that you're not paying as much for the food. Make a choice and quit complaining so much, so what, someone didn't smile at you, or something broke. Get off your bum and go into the store to complain if something is wrong and i bet you it will be resolved. If you can't be bothered then that is your fault. We're not your slaves.

I worked for Aldi in Australia Qld up until last week. I tried to save some plants because the managers do not look after live plants, cycads, palms fruit trees, and I was fired for stealing rubbish!!!!As they classed the tree as written off! All i could think of was the producer who had lovingly grown that sapling for Aldi to ruin it. Unbelievable. I was a great worker and I am 40 and superfit using Aldi as a workout each day. My team of staff are shattered to think they could be fired just for looking after plants! PS every Aldi employee in Australia has their store phone number.

I am sorry to hear all of the negatives because I get the best customer service at Aldi's and I do have regular cashiers. They are always courteous and put my stuff in my cart gently, but quickly always making sure my eggs, bread, etc are put in the front where they will not get smashed. I hope Aldi can straighten out their other locations to keep customers like all of you!

I read an article about ALDI taking Wally world"s place and began to do a search, running across this web page. I feel sorry for the workers. This is because at one time I worked for Super-X / a division of Kroger. They opened these stores in FL. Let me tell you, ALDI sounds just like Super-X was. Work you to the bone and ungoldly hours. Hurt yourself and they found a way to get rid of you. Wow, reading all this sure brought back memories of that crummy job. This is why I'm FOR unions. Good luck to all employees of ALDI. Just remember not to sacrifice your health for them. It will NEVER be worth it. Take care! :)

I worked for this company and everything you are reading above is VERY true....between making two stack of apps. bad ang good. as soon as you are hurt or sick boom your gone. all they care about is fast scanning and breaking your back stocking. The DM's are the worst. Most of them come straight from college and stress there book sense over you and never listen to problems. I am so glad I got smart enought to get the hell out of the company. but when you leave they deduct so much from your check you can kiss that last pay check good bye. you sign your life away daily with all there changes to bad we did not have time to read the shit but no you had to get to the floor fast so here sign or be fired. blah..and now they are changing the labels and products and that has gone to very low standards...hell look at all there own recalls.....but they don't post them at the store either. they tell you the warehouse is out of stock.

I am not very impressed with aldi either. I recently purchased a digital kitchen scale to weight ingredients rather than measuring, and low and behold, I find that the Friendly Farms butter is not a full 1 pound! It is actually 15 0z, rather than 16 ounces, which is almost 1 tablespoon short. I thought perhaps it may have been just the one package that I purchased so over a 2 month period I purchased one pound per week, the weight was the same on all. It appears that there is some kind of rip off going on there. I am very disappointed and with no way to contact the company, I am thinking about contacting a local news station to do some checking. I wonder how many other products this is happening to? Consumer beware!

Smart Company, and I wish them well. We save about 30% from the chain stores. Love the $.25 carts that save my car from dents. Like not having to look through the incredible selections of 100,000 foods offered at the chains. The daily restock means that items are almost always available. Checkout lines take less than 1/4 the time of regular chains. My stores, Il and Fl, are clean. Employees hardworking and courteous. (Good personnel selection). Returns taken gracefully, without question. I need to save money, and am pleased to do it efficiently, with dignity, and without making the shopping experience an all-day affair. I wouldn't work there as I am too old, but consider that Aldi's was not designed to be a place for retirement. As with Walmart, Aldi's has worked smart. The cookie cutter approach works. Not perfect, and I regret that their customer relations via email is not forthcoming, but I'll continue to shop there.

I recently sent a cover letter and resume online to ALDI. I was concerned when I viewed their website that all the District Managers and Store Managers were all very young. I also noticed that they recruit for these positions at universities. I wondered whether my observations were correct, and from reading many of the comments here I am convinced that there is definitely some form of age discrimnation here, but as usual, impossible to prove. I am 54 and healthy with a world of experience plus an MBA. I definitely won't be expecting any response from ALDI, especially in this economy.

02/21/09 Today, I was rudely told to move to the next cashier like I was a child. The cashier had handed the customer ahead of us a closed sign while I was standing there. I was already in line to check out. So I went to the next cashier in the back of the line. while I was waiting the other cashier took two other customers. As she told them that people like me can not read a sign. Well, I am not going to stand for it. I have a college degree and I have been in customer service over twenty years. So I asked the cashier for the managers name and if he was available. Well there was only two cashiers and the store was very busy. I asked for a phone number to call and speak with the manager, they replied "we can not give you that information". The cashier offered a complaint form, I agreeded to take one, she asked me to fill it out and she would give it to the manager. In the meantime she had to ask the cashier who told me to move to the other line to go get the complaint form for me. All I heard was drama all the way to the office. Then she hands me the form and starts to complain to other customers about me requesting a complaint form. I have shopped at aldi's for over five years, I have just moved to greensboro NC and This is what I have encountered. I go out of my way to shop there. Today is the last day I will support them. I will have nothing good to say, and I will do more business in my local area. Thanks for letting me vent. Because from what I have read there is point of contact for customers to give their complaints to, and get results.
GOOD LUCK IF YOU STILL SHOP THERE!!!!

I am so surprised by this site. I googled "aldi email" because I wanted to send them an email saying thank you very much. I started going to a new one in Lakeland Florida. I expected the scratch and dent dollar store atmosphere. I was pleasently surprised. Also I am impressed with their buisness plan and subsequent green byproduct. I cant say the staff was out of the way overly friendly, but I was in and out quickly. Even what appeared to be a long line moved quite fast. Rude people are everywhere even Disney who spends millions just to be friendly. I too am glad that they pay well.
I love the place and have saved over $200 this month. I dont mind bringing my own bags, I dont mind having to make sure I have a quarter. I have had great customer service.
It would not cost much to have a customer service email. I was one who was going to send Kudo's
For the disgruntled shoppers and workers, go somewhere else and let me shop at a place I love in peace and save money.

Adli bashing? Why? I go there for good value. Folks looking free poodle grooming while they shop, or need to get their butt kissed everywhere they go, need to go to a full service fancy decked out grocery store. I save money and have not found any bad quality products. I'll bring bags or nab some empty boxes in the store or something, I don't care.
The Parkview grilling sausages are better than most brands and have that old style flavor I remember. Great stuff for a good value! Hey Aldi's, we need Parkview Knockwurst at the Kennesaw Georgia USA store! We have a serious shortage here and it's an emergency!

I used to do Mystery Shopping for Aldi. The checklist that I had to do when I entered the store was quite extensive. I was often forced to ask a question that would make a cashier go above and beyond the call of duty. I had to check the freshness and expiration dates on dozens of items. I have been impressed with the Aldi stores I mystery shopped. The customer service was wonderful. I never had any issues when I looked for expired or spoiled food. I think the only problem with one store had flowers on the shelf with an expiration of 2 days. It might be different in different regions of the country but it seems they care about customer service in my area.
As far as Aldi employees work. I KNOW people at Aldi work hard. I have never had any issues with any of the store employees at my local store. They seem like very nice people. In fact the other day I didn't have a quarter for a cart. They were very busy and I asked them if I could cash in 25 Pennies for a Quarter. I apologized for making them do that, but they were very nice about it. By the way.. I stopped Mystery Shopping about 4 years ago. Gas prices, and time commitments at my other full time job made me stop doing it.. But I was impressed with Aldi and based on the Mystery Shopping experience they have made me returning customer.

I had to return 2 containers of cottage cheese to Aldi's today and the manager immediately took care of the return but failed to honor their Double Guarantee Pledge. Since I also purchased a few extra items when I returned the cottage cheese I didn't notice I did not receive my money back until I returned home. They only exchanged my items for new ones. I had the original receipt. Do you have to ask them to honor their company policy? I would think it would be automatic since they have the guarantee posted in the stores and on each product.

I don't know what Aldi stores have such bad experiences, but I have been with the company for 2 years and I can give you explanations for most of these complaints.
Why we don't have a phone number:
If there is an issue, the issue is dealt with face to face at your store. Aldi carries a double your money back guarantee, which means, if a product was bad or you had a problem, you are entitled to a replacement product AND your money back. Go to your local store, WITH YOUR RECEIPT, and notify the manager. If there is a problem with a product, we need to know about it to ensure the safety for everyone. We strive very hard to keep our customers coming back. We do not have a listed phone number because we are VERY busy stocking the shelves, bringing out fresh produce, etc (we don't just sit at our registers!) and we can't stop to get the phone everytime someone wants to know if we have something in stock. We carry items every week, called special purchase items, and when they're gone they are gone. If there happens to be a problem, the manager should fix it or direct with contact information to someone who can fix it. This is the hardest labor job I have ever had (and I've done construction, cleaning, etc)and I work very hard, but I am still kind and treat EVERYONE with respect. I'm sorry for all these bad experiences and I wish everyone the best.

Igo to many of the ALDI RDC's around the country every week. Trust me, this bad attitude is from the bottomto the top, ALDI is a cheap no frills company that dont realy care what there staff say or do to customers or suppliers because they are a worldwide company and have lots of investers behind them. ALDI must remember that people will only take this so many times and then not shop there. This business is only as big as it is because peopleshop there. with the prices going up in ALDI, they need to spend more time working on customer relations and not there bad attitude.

Wow! I am amazed at some of these comments. I just went to Aldi for the first time today and was impressed with the priced and selection. Yes they certainly do lack customer service skills. I went to the Aldi website and noticed they have Easter Candy Selction on their home page. It is August! So I went to email customer care to inquire why Easter Candy would be on the front page in the middle of summer. Their attention to detail, customer service and quality are all reflected through their lack of Customer Care phone # or web form. The message they are sending is "f__ you and if you have a complaint send it via old fashioned snail mail."

Let me just start out by saying that EVERYONE should always think about their actions before they act on them, both customers and employees. Yeah, the employee shouldn't be rude, but you must give respect in order to receive it. If you are rude to them they will be rude back. And employees need to understand that customers may be confused about the polices or procedures of the store.
The "Customer is always right" saying does not apply at Aldi, and here is why: Aldis procedures are different from other stores, so if a customer wants the cashier to bag their groceries because they feel that it should be a service rendered to them by the store, they are wrong because that is not how Aldi operates. However, the cashier should not be rude or nasty, but explain WHY they don't bag the groceries, or WHY you have to pay 25 cents for a cart (which you get back anyways, its only a deposit). Beyond explaining why they operate that way there is not much they can do, the customer should accept the fact that that is not how things are done at Aldi, and if they don't like it they are by no means obligated to shop there. So Aldi has more of a "The Customer is MOSTLY right" approach.
It looks to me like the experiences of both employees and customers vary widely from store to store. I have work for Aldi for just over a year and I love working there. But it may be that I have a very good store manager and district manager, and all of the cashiers are dependable and friendly, which can really make the difference in a job. My manager works around other jobs and school (3 of our 7 employees have another part time job and 1 goes to school). Yes, the work is hard, but its nothing that myself or any of the other employees are not capable of. To address the age issue, we have one employee who is 53 years old, 3 in their 40's, 2 in their 30's and 1 who is 20. As to the sex discrimination, there may be some truth to it, as I have noticed a great deal more women than men throughout Aldi stores, but (and not to be stereotypical or sexist myself) there is a common misconception that women multi task better than men, which in Aldi world, multitasking is essential. I have never been written up for calling in, being slow, or just not doing something the right way (again I believe it must be the difference in store managers and district managers. I have been asked to come in early or stay late on occasion, which I don't mind, especially considering that sometimes on slower days I might get sent home early.
As far as some of the customer complaints go: (again these must vary by location)
No, we do not give out our telephone number for reasons stated above. If you have a problem with a product or service we handle it face to face in the store, you took the time to come to Aldi to get whatever it was you needed, if it was a product you didn't like or was damaged we will gladly replace it with the double money back guarantee (my store always honors this policy, heck, a customer broke a case of soda in the parking lot putting it into their car and we gave them another case plus the money for the first one).
For returning items, most items can be returned without a receipt, special purchase items, fresh meat, and anything you bought more than 2 of require a receipt though. There have been numerous cases of customers abusing the Aldi return policy and IT IS the cashier who gets in trouble for it, so if you encounter any trouble in returning something with out a receipt you now know why.
This goes for anyone dissatisfied with any product ANYWHERE: it is not the cashiers/managers fault if we don't have an item you want, the water tastes like bleach, the flavor of your oatmeal has changed, and yes even occasional mold in the packaging even though it hasn't expired, so to take it out on the cashier/manager is wrong because it really and truly is not their fault. However, at Aldi, we will try our best to make it right, by offering our double money back guarantee or directing you to a store that might have the item you are looking for. This also goes for items we are out of. Some times we don't get everything we ordered, and if thats the case we just don't have it and no amount of complaining will fix it. Please understand we are only human. And again, if you are rude to us, we will be rude back. But please, if we are rude to you to begin with, by all means call us out on it.
Putting the groceries into the cart seems to be a big issue of grievance as well. We are required to scan items very quickly, to get through our lines fast, so that means your groceries are going into the cart very fast. But one thing you must realize is that we do this all day several days a week and most of us know how to be fast and not destructive (again must vary by location). And if something is broken or smashed we will replace it. It can be alarming to see your groceries pushed into the cart, but if the cashier is doing it correctly things shouldn't be getting broken, even though it can look forceful. Most of the time the items are hitting the cart no heavier than you yourself are putting them in as you shop. If you are upset that Aldi is too fast paced you do not have to shop there, and most of the time if we are not getting complained to by customers about going to fast, they find something else to complain about, and nothing will ever be perfect or exactly the way you want it.
Sometimes it can be alarming to see the cashier put your items in the same cart as the last customer, but if you didn't bring a cart in, or the customer before you didn't, than you/they can't take a cart out so you must collect your items from the cart. However the cashier usually places each customers items in a different part of the cart to separate them, i.e. top and bottom. And if somehow they DO get mixed up you always have your receipt to show what you purchased, and the cashier will make sure you leave with what you paid for. For those who didn't bring a cart in, you may not take our cart because we need it to put the next customers groceries in. You carried your items to the checkout with no problem, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to leave that way.
If you are unsure about how Aldi operates just ask a cashier, they will explain it and answer your questions.
If you do not put a divider between you and someone else's groceries there is about a 95% chance we will start scanning the two orders together. We did not go shopping with you, we don't know what's yours and what's not, even though to you it may be obvious, so please do not get upset if you fail to put a divider in and your groceries end up with someone else's. If that does happen, it is easily fixed, but a hassle to everyone involved.
Get off your cell phones when checking out. Its rude.
My store recently started asking for an ID for ANYONE who wants to purchase alcohol. (some stores do not sale alcohol) This is because some Aldi stores were set up with undercover minors who looked well over 21 and failed to ask for an ID. So now they take extra precaution. Yes, we think it is a hassle, and yes we know you are over 21 when you walk up there with a cane and an oxygen tank, but we are required to ask for an ID. It is our job and we do not like doing it, in fact its extremely embarrassing. If we were to sell alcohol to a minor, we the cashier will personally be fined (in my state approx $350) and fired. Be flattered and make it a story to tell your kids/grandkids. In fact, we cannot proceed with the transaction until a birth date is entered into the computer.
If you need a large order of something let the store know a week ahead of time, its just common courtesy, and how else are they supposed to know that you need 5 cases of string cheese unless you tell them. Maybe they have enough on the shelf to meet your needs but if you take all but 3 of the product then they have to hear it from other customers that its bad customer service to not have that item. And again, they take care of things in person, so don't get upset if you can't just call them.
If for some reason you do no have enough money to pay, understand that we cannot help you, as much as we'd like to because we do not like putting away a cart full of groceries when someone can't pay. If you use your debit card and it says you don't have enough money, there is nothing we can do, the machine won't take it, and its not our fault. We know its frustrating but please do not take it out on us.
So Aldi may do things differently, but no one requires you to shop or work there.

i am an aldi employee and love it. I hate to hear so many bad complaints, I dont know where you guys are located but I assure you that not all locations are like that. We definitly strive to be number one in our customer service or else we get fired, per DM. One customer complaint is a written warning then a second means you're fired. they do work us hard but they pay wonderfully and the benifits are great. Basically they pay you amazingly and expect you to work amazingly.

We shop at aldi because we are a low income family and have no choice but to shop there. My complaints are of the lack of CS and tainted food. We try to keep healthy as possible at a low cost due to diabites and with the fit and active products they have we decided to try it. the flavor waters are great but due to heatle issues the only flavor we can drink is the cranberry waters. and this is the 4th week and still no waters. we have been soda free including diet sodas for many years and we dont drink juices cause of the added sugers. we asked the manager why they dont order any more and all he said was we " we have whats out on the floor" that didnt answer my question. the we wanted to try the fit and active hot pockets and loved it but a few times we found chicken tumors in them and often found and oder and taste of soap to them so we stop buying them. My nephew who is living with us wanted a box of there brand cereal and nearly broke a tooth when he chewed on a rock hard chunck the size of a marble. it was a chunck of sprinkles that didnt stick to the cereal when it was made. From reading from this blog i will stay clear from all frozen foods there as well.

I must say that "Karol" covered quite a lot in her comment and did so quite well.
But as far as the hiring qualifications--you must be 18 years-old or older. You MUST be a high school graduate.
I think for the most part, Aldi doesn't like to hire people who think they already know what it's like working there e.g. someone who has worked at another grocery store. I think men aren't considered to be cashiers because they tend to slack off because they think it is easy work. They definitely don't hire anyone who can't lift heavy boxes repeatedly. Age isn't really isn't the issue, as I've seen middle-aged people working there, but a matter of strength and endurance.
One thing I've noticed is that they frequently hire people who were paid quite a bit less prior to working there.
The DM's are hired straight out of college. Most of the DM's have never worked a day in their life before Aldi. They like them that way so they can brainwash/indoctrinate them.
Aldi employee policy (in a nutshell)--do as much work as humanly possible and get out as soon as you're done even if you're scheduled to work later than that. Extra people in the store=wasted dollars.
P.S. If you have a problem with a product, return it--they'll refund your money. If you have a problem with your service (and you've already figured out the cart and bagging system) speak to the manager. It's that simple. If the manager gives you shit, tell them to have their district manager call you. If for some reason, he is an inept bastard--have him connect you to the corporate office.
The DM's can be dicks. I have seen it before. Once, I saw an old lady complaining about Aldi's lack of motorized wheelchairs and the DM hid in the office and sent out the store manager to do his biding.
Oftentimes, the DM's don't really know what to do.
Overall, the products are good. When complaints consistently arise over a product, it is taken off the shelf. The deep freezer foods I would be worried about. The ice cream can taste chalky because it has sat out for hours and then refrozen. That is because there are so many freezer pallets for one person to stock at once and there is no space in the freezer for all of them to remain in there while stocking.

Whoooaaa, and I thought the Aldi's opening in my neighborhood was a good thing. Of course, I had previously experienced the poor customer service at another area store, but mistook it for a fluke. Anyhoo, It's quite validating to know I'm not imagining the hostile vibe I sense every time I visit the store 3 blocks from my home.
Oh Patti, which Aldi's do you frequent? You're one of only a few folks who have no complaints. Are you sure you don't own stock in Aldi's??
Hey TJ, thanks soooo much for this website. May you be much blessed for providing this outlet. Aldi's corporate execs need to read these comments. Someone needs to tell them that in America, "the customer is always right."

I am an ex Aldi employee. I stuck it for 4 and a half years. I witnessed Human rights violations. I saw Assistant Manager's sexual assualt 2 members of staff. I have seen staff physically assaulted. I seen bullying on a big scale administered on a daily basis. i have since Spoke to other staff that have left who were near to suicide through lack of self esteem. Their confidense stripped from them. All this is due to people put in managerial positions who are incapable of doing the job. I reported these issues to the Store Operations Manager. Who in turn sent me to another store all the abusers were promoted to running their own store. Staff who complained were driven out by managers giving crap hours and given impossible tasks to do on your own with impossible deadlines. This company should be accountable for all its abuse and pain that it has put on its staff. Everyone should stop shopping there until unions are accepted to protect its employees. Or policed by an independent source. I have never seen such a high turn over of staff. I worked for a company in England for 25 years and enjoyed every minute all staff was treated with respect and got all their entitlements. My experience in ALDI was shocking i had no idea that a company could treat its staff in such an abusive way and get away with it. People need to know what goes on behind closed doors. Anyone who has worked there knows what i mean. And as for Refridgerated stock stay away from it. I seen a Aldi employee take Frozen stock from one Aldi store to another in his car(which wasn't refridgerated or insured to do so) on a warm day on a journey that took 1hr 10 minutes this was authorised by the Area Manager so the other Aldi store had a full Freezer for his BOARD VISIT. The Aldi Staff hand book reads beautifully one of its first paragraphs is about how they care for their staff. I warn all you poor unsuspecting future members this book is COSMETIC. BE WARNED.

I have to disagree with bobby. I've worked for aldi's for 14 yrs and they do work you to the bone with no pay raises after you reach their "cap". Unfortunately, they keep expecting more out of you. People who have been there for several years only make $1.50 less than me. How is that fair? And yes I could get another job but in this area jobs are very scarce. I just wish aldi would consider employee loyalty and not put impossible expectations on us like running a busy store with only 1 or 2 cashiers (if you're lucky) and a manager. You can't understand the expectations put on you unless you've worked there. I'm sure there are many other retail jobs like that out there doing the very same thing to their employees. I'm not saying there's nothing positive about the job but there certainly is more and more negative things every time I turn around. They've taken away our Sundays (we had always been closed before), we have to go in at 5 AM to stock shelves (formerly it was 6 AM), they now have us open later at night, are very slow to hire more help, have cleaning lists which you never have the time or manpower to complete, they've made the manager come in on her vacation and thanksgiving day. I could go on but I think you get the idea. This will be my last year there.

Ok, so I am hearing a lot of bad things from Aldi employees. But I will be attending a hiring event on Thursday for CASHIERS. I am in shape, 24 years old, and no kids. Should I take a cover letter and resume, or worry about it if I get called for an interview? Because it seems as if they are just checking you physically for the job at these events. What should I wear? What did you all do when you were at the event? And although the event is for CASHIERS, can I apply for management trainee? This is only a job to save some money and move... But i REALLY need this job right now. What is the most cashiers make? thank you all

I have read the comment from you all and would like to add some comments of my own.
First of all I am with Aldi's for 9 months now at a suburban Aldi's in Illinois. I am 50 years old, married with 3 children. I was an office manager that was layed off due to the economy. I went to a hiring event and was called in for 3 interviews. Although I did not get the job as cashier from that hiring event, the District Manager gave my info to another Aldi's that happened to be 5 minutes from my home. After interviewing with that D.M. I was offered the job the next day. Sent Downtown Chicago to interview and take a drug test. I passed and was offered the job.
I was trained for 2 weeks. I work with a complete staff of 10 employees including the General Manager.
including myself in age we are broken down as follows:
2 - 30 to 39 year olds
2 - 40 to 49 year olds
6 - 50 to 59 year olds
the District Manager is in her 20's
I am a cashier, I stock, I re-shop, I do inventory (when required) after the store closes we count EVERYTHING IN THE ENTIRE STORE and get home about midnight. I know how to use all the machines, *I use the floor scrubber, I sweep the store, I edge mop the entire store, I mop under any displays, I clean the bathrooms, I clean the special purchase freezer, I clean the conveyor belts, I wipe down the bagging counter (*) These are all done when you work the close shift. I am a firm believer that if you are afraid of hard work then DO NOT APPLY FOR A JOB AT ALDI! It is that simple. Yes when I get home I am tired but I know I did an honest days work. I start my day with a smile and continue it until the end of the day. I am an person who takes pride in anything I do. It is who I am. I am grateful to have a job.
Our customers are loyal customers who take pride in our store if you can believe that. I have seen customers who have given another customer money if they were short. I even experienced a customer buying another customers items that had to put back because of a shortage of funds. I have had 2 different customers return wallets they found(in tack and nothing taken) They give us groceries left in the oddest places that were left by other customers. They are warm and friendly and patient. We have customers who have been shopping with our store for Years that brought us baked goods at Christmas. An extremely high percentage of our customers know us all by name. I have customers that come up to me to say hello even though they were not in my line. I have customers who have know me since day one on the register and comment on my progress as a cashier. I shop at my Aldi's and when I go in there in my regular clothes I am stopped by our customers who just want to chat.
If there is a customer who is UNHAPPY with there experience at Aldi all they have to do is report it to the ALDI store at which they had a problem. If you are not able to talk to the General Manager then leave YOUR Name and Telephone number for the District Manager of that store.
I work at a store that has 4 employees that have worked together at Aldi's 30 plus years and 2 employees that have worked for 10 plus years. Then there are the 4 of us with 5 or less years. That says a lot to me about Aldi Foods.
My friend has worked for Walmart for over 7 years and I am making more than her hourly. I have GREAT insurance. (Medical, Dental and Vision)After 6 months I got 1 week vacation and at 1 year will be given another week vacation. Plus I get Personal days.
I am able request days off (without) pay. I just place the request on the calendar. I have yet to be refused a day off!
Regarding pay: At the end of this year (I was working only 8 months) I was given a raise to be effective on my 1 year anniversary. Those employees that have capped out are given a lump sum.
I love working at Aldi and am not afraid of hard work. I am also grateful to be working in this weak economy.

I had a dreadful experience at Aldi today where i have happily shopped for the last 3 years. For the first time, my food was being flung into the cart like fish off a boat. My pleas to be more careful were ignored and when i asked to speak to the manager, lo and behold he is the manager. so where does one go from there? I have composed a letter to send to headquarters, and will go to another location to try to find contact information for the distric manager but my loyalty to aldi's was shattered by how this young man handled the situation. as a middle aged white woman and transplant to the south, i unwittingly hit a raw nerve with this young black man when i called him 'son'...i call all young men son...he instantly responded that he is not my son and got an attitude that was apparent with the violence with which he threw my food. i regret that i did not simply leave it there and exit. i will no longer be giving Aldi's my business nor encouraging people to shop there.

I have worked for Aldi as a shift manager for almost 4 years now. I can totally agree with a lot of the comments I've read on here. Let me just say that I am in complete agreeance with Karol. She explained perfectly how I feel on most topics.
I will agree that Aldi is a VERY physically demanding job. When you apply for a job, you are not discriminated for your age. They are looking for people who appear to have the physical ability to do the job. In my store, we have two women(cashiers) in their 50's. Most of the time, they want only younger people as managers or shift managers. Also, they want to see that you care enough about getting a job to dress yourself nicely. When you go to fill out an application, go ahead and dress as if you were interviewing. If you bring your children with you, they assume you will have problems with childcare. If you are not someone who is willing to work hard, and be available when needed, don't apply. I have worked MANY of my days off, and stay past my scheduled time often. When applying, you should put your availability as "any time". Aldi isn't a place where you have a set schedule. You can't work only days, no week-ends. (Speaking of weekends, I too am upset about the fact that they opened on Sundays.)
As for those of you who seem to think Aldi doesn't care about customer service, that is #1 priority. We have a list of priorities, and Customer Service/Safety is #1. Some people think we are being rude because they don't understand the way Aldi operates. I'm not saying none of you have been treated rudely, because no-one can be nice every minute of every day.
To the lady who was treated rudely by the manager, I hope you are able to contact the district manager and get the situation resolved. In my area, that behavior would not be tolerated. It's a shame you had such a bad experience, and intend not to shop at Aldi any more.

I have only positive comments about the Aldi in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We had a bad experience with a bag of frozen vegetables. I complained and they gave me another bag and gave me my money back. Then an Aldi corporate employee called us to apologize and sent us $15 store credit. On the other hand, I cut myself on a poorly designed can from the Piggly Wiggly and they blew me off when I called to make them aware of a potential-lawsuit-producing problem. They could not have cared less about me or my complaint. GO ALDI!

Its not the job i dislike, i dont mind hard work.
But you customers are just absolute bastards, the majority of you are rude and ignorant sods, And will you please stop trying to quote trading standards laws, or saying the customer is always right, cus you know what your not!
You will find if you treat the staff nicer you will get alot more out of them.
O an by all means moan and whine to the managers because if you local ones are like any i have been in, the store will only have about 8-10 staff so they are all pretty close, its like and extended family, so the manager may put a show on if the customer is stood there but soon as you leave it goes no further. (unless of cors the staff member has dont something actually wrong, not just told a rude customer to sod off and shop elsewhere.

Aa a workplace, Aldi sounds no different from any other retailer--they are all (big surprise!) purely profit-driven and care nothing for employees as human beings. This rule logically goes for any profit-driven enterprise, really. I don't know what the solution is as long as we live in a modern capitalistic/corporate-ruled society. The whole nature of work has gone sour for so many. No longer are hard work, loyalty, integrity and initiative rewarded; endurance, strength, speed, and unquestioning compliance to empirical/logistical standards are all that matter. I recently spoke with a woman in her early 60s (my guess) who, in looking for work to keep bills paid, food on the table, etc. while she tries to break back into education after being staff-cut from a school district, was told she "had no skills." We are letting "the economy" become an excuse for hiring entities to use only the narrowest of knee-jerk parameters to determine eligibility--and, yes, I firmly believe age is one of them, though this is as hard to prove as wrestling jello.
As far as shopping at Aldi, I have never been treated rudely, partly because (having been in the trenches myself) I always treat the employees as well as possible. I buy eggs there and have never gotten sick from them that I can determine, and I'm hypervigilant about such matters due to IBS. I steer clear of all the wrapped veggies. This is just common sense: no plant products do well wrapped in plastic, they need air or they'll get funky.
In closing: probably the only way to get completely exploitation-free food is to grow your own from seed you harvested, in soil you tilled with tools you made. The same goes for any goods or services anywhere in the world. As for working in retail, it demands great energy, stamina, strength, and an impossible combination of emotional detachment and outward cheerfulness, and is probably best performed by androids. Oh--and "liking people" is the last reason you should consider retail! If you care, you'll crack up.

I have determined that I will never shop at Aldis again. On two different occasions I was treated very rudely by the clerks, and found out when I went to complain about the second time that it was the store manager. My husband is disapointed because we do save money on many products that we purchase there but I feel it is not worth being treated so poorly to save $20-$40 dollars a month.
I understand wanting to move lines along quickly so pulling the cart they have stashed on the side for certain customers is probably a very wise decision but doing so when you have a mother with a toddler, diaper bag and shopping bags all stuffed into her cart is uncallled for. Asking me to have to move to shopping carts about the crowded store is uncalled for especially when my cart is empty and I am pushing forward after the previous customer. I would understand if I still had grocerises to unload in my cart but I do not. And they way I was spoken to as if I was an unimportant object in the way of getting the job done. I have worked in retail and customer service my entire life, 7 of those as a front desk person at a Hotel, I understand being tired and overworked but I never once was so rude and unhelpful to a customer.
And for all those who say that Aldis is big on customer service that is bull because I cannot get the manager to tell me who his boss is so that I can voice my complaint and when I went online to find info found nothing. Now I understand why he smircked at me when I said I would e-mail the corporation.
NOT WORTH THE SAVINGS

In respose to Snook, big deal! Why do mothers feel that they are exempt from every rule that has been implemented just because they had a child? So just because you have children you should't have to switch your cart! Get over yourself. You know this is standard store operating procedures so why ask them to change the rules just for you! I am happy they said no because too many women with children think the world owes them something just because THEY decided to have kids. It was your choice and you knew the way the world operated before you had them. Don't expect people to accomdate you based on your own life decisions!Oh and by the way I have three children and don't expect special treatment!

I have worked for Aldi for 8 months. Recently I was made shift manager but haven't been given proper training and yet being called out on not being fast enough. I'm sick of being forced to work off the clock and so I asked that it stop. Every since then I am discriminated against in everything. Everyone is allowed to trade except for me. I want to quit but I can't find my employee handbook. Does anyone know if I quit before my scheduled vacation (I earned it last winter) but scheduled it future from now, will they pay me that or do I lose it?
I think Aldi over works you, expects you to work late into the night then open and unload a truck at the crack of dawn the next morning. They only notice mistakes and never the things that you do right. I have witnessed this with all the employees in the store where I have worked.
Bottom line, anybody know my vacation, sick pay and personal time rights?

ALDI DOESN'T GIVE A DAMM ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS Incident. I went into the aldi in romeoville, IL on the corner of Weber and Airport Rd at 7:58pm store is open until 8. Front door was locked, went in on the exit side. Woman cashier told me store was closed. I said I needed to buy a gallon of milk (NO SPIN). I had my 5 year old with me. Woman said. WE ARE CLOSED. customers were still in the store. I said again. Wanted milk. Cashier said WE ARE CLOSED and with her arm told ushered me to leave. I said, so much for taking care of the customer and wanting business and walked out in anger. Went to Walmart across the street, bought milk and other groceries there. Cashier at Walmart asked me how I was. Told the Walmart associate my experience across the street at the aldi. She told me, don't worry WALMART WELCOMES YOUR BUSINESS. I said Thank You.

WHY, on EARTH, would you go at 7:58.....when CLOSE is at 8:00???? Doesn't EVEN make sense......would you walk into a restaurant......or anywhere else, and expect people to give up THEIR family time for YOU??? That's what's wrong with this world, too many people wrapped up in THEMSELVES!!!
